Your Allies in Navigating Borderline Personality Disorder

Welcome to the BPD Alliance. Our formal name is the National Education Alliance for Borderline Personality Disorder (NEABPD) — and we recently added BPD Alliance as an easier name for you to know us by.

Whether you live with BPD, love someone who does, or support families, you belong here. Our purpose is simple: to reduce suffering, foster understanding, and guide you toward hope and healing.

We serve by bringing you information worthy of your trust. This site is where you will find the most comprehensive collection of evidence-based resources, and access to programs like Family Connections and Managing Suicidality & Trauma Recovery.

What is BPD?

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a serious mental health condition that affects how people think, feel, and connect with others. It is often misunderstood, yet it touches millions of lives worldwide — not only individuals, but entire families and communities.

Common Features of BPD

  • Intense, rapidly changing emotions
  • Challenges in relationships and trust
  • Deep fear of abandonment
  • Impulsivity or self-harming behaviors
  • Difficulty coping with stress and anger

The Truth About BPD

  • More common than schizophrenia and bipolar disorder combined
  • Affects an estimated 1.6% of adults in the U.S.
  • Ripple effects extend to 5 to 7% of families nationwide
  • Scientists agree that causes of BPD likely involve genetics and environmental factors – including traumas such as abuse, bullying, or violence.
